Peter Berg knows all about being caught between the Rock and a hard place. In the fall of 2001, the actor-writer-director scrapped two projects after Sept.11: one about firefighters who accidentally set a blaze while pulling off a heist; the other a small drama about a nuclear accident in the Soviet Union. "After 9/11," says Berg, "there was a backlash against anything that had to do with weapons of mass destruction." Make that non-human weapons of mass destruction. When Universal began work on a follow-up project for The Scorpion King's The Rock, it immediately went to Berg. The director of the black comedy Very Bad Things may not seem like a natural fit for the yet-to-be-titled, sweaty, ammo-filled, big-budget action pic, but "Pete has a very keen beat on guys being guys," explains producer Kevin Misher. "That's what this movie is." The film stars the wrestler otherwise known as Dwayne Johnson (above, with Berg) as a ready-to-retire bounty hunter and costars a buffed-up Seann William Scott (American Pie) as the gold-hunting renegade he's chasing. These two hunks on the run face more bombshells than Enron's chief executives. Berg doesn't seem fazed by the size of the project. "The movies I hope to make are generally bigger in scope. I don't feel overwhelmed," he adds with a smile. "And if I did, I'd never admit it."
